Wed. Bike
After a 6 day layoff I finally get in a workout.
I got to the parking lot after everyone had left. I had to hump it alone almost the whole way. I passed the No Drop group at 635 and Luna and caught up with some of the Intermediate group leaving Las Colinas. Pulled through VR and part of Belt Line. I worked very hard and a had a good ride.
18.5 mph. slower than last week but sense I was on my own I felt good about the pace.
Enjoyed beer and pizza after the ride and was happy to skip the swim.

Wed. Bike/Swim
Biking might actually be improving. Rode with the slow intermediate and I caught up with Peter. That’s right the infamous "HIM” himself. When he looked back and saw me I think a little air went out of his tires. Not only that, I did some pulling myself. Some of the pull was with the wind in VR, but I also pulled down Beltline and was able to maintain over 19 mph.
Ave 19.1 - best ride to date.
Swim - slow start, Tom was late on deck.
wu - 200 pull, 50 swim
100 Sprint
3 x 300
3 x x150
3 x 75
Each 100, 50 and 25 set faster.
no cd
Total 1,675
Fought cramps the last 1/2 of the swim. Never got a full blown cramp but was so close.
Right foot, calf, and at the end thigh.
Overall another good Wed. night workout.

Hills of VR
Waiting in the parking lot David shows up. He is not going to ride so I am on my own. After putting in a good 40 miles yesterday I was dubious about the hills and rightfully so. After the first climb I was having to spin up in second gear. My legs just did not have the strength. I decided (being the wise old man that I am) to just ride around the neighborhood
for a while and consider it a recovery ride.

Wed. Bike
Beautiful day. Rode with the lower Intermediate Group. I was able to hang with the front 6 riders although they pulled me along. I felt like a poser. Still very satisfied with the ride.
Swim - Ken on deck(he rode the VR hills Monday). A little different than Tom. Shorter distance, more technique and breathing.
Finally a full Wednesday workout.

Dog Run
Me and Trigger went for a lake run. I forgot to check my watch.
About 45 min. Around a 145 HR. Nice day although the temp was in the high 80's the wind was cool.

Swim/bike
750 meter swim at Loos at lunch. They had the entire 50 meters open.
Olympic pace.
Rode the Hills of VR with a couple of guys. Ken (not ours) and Bob.
They took the short route, which skips a couple of hills, I took the long.
4X felt the burn. Good ride

Granbury
Saturday Granbury ride.
Pecan Plantation has to be the best place in Texas to ride a bike.
Smooth asphalt roads, little traffic and fairly flat.
27 miles, 18mph ave.
I wish I could ride there every week.

MS 150
Saturday: windy
I treated this ride more like a Wednesday night ride than the first half of a 150 miles. Short version - I probable drank the equivalent of 1 bottle of Accelerade, 1 bottle of water and couple snacks along the way. Jimmy and I hooked up with a couple of fast groups for the first 40 miles. The last group that I hung with was trucking at 27 mph on the flats. After about 50 miles I was toast. No leg strength left. A slow last hard long 20 miles. I made Jimmy go on ahead so I would not be bogging him down. I still finished at noon which was my goal.
But the way I finished just sucked the life out of me. And - I had 75 more miles to go the next day. I was not looking forward to it. At the TXU tent we talked about my “problem”. Well, 5 bottles, 4 - 5 gel shots, lot’s more snack (carbs) a better breakfast was more of what I should have done.
Excuse? I have none.
Sunday: very windy
Saturday night I cleaned my bike, oiled the chain. My bike and I had a private conversation in the garage in which I apologized for my poor preparation. Steel cut oatmeal, a bottle of Gatorade for breakfast, a Camelback full of
water, 2 bottles of Accelerade, 4 Gel shots, 2 bars plus I knew I would get some more nutrition at three short stops.
It took a few miles for my leg to into the ride, but I already felt better. The ride out to Decatur was pretty fast. At Decatur it was a left turn straight into the wind all the way to down town Ft. Worth. Jimmy and I traded off about every mile but it
was a grind. Hooked up with two more guys which allowed us to pick up the pace. Four in the rotation was much better than two. By the way the aero bars were great for the lead position. I still got weak toward the end and finish about 40 minutes slower than Saturday but I enjoyed the ride more because overall I felt that I did a better job.
Lesions Learned:
Drink a bottle minimum every hour - thirsty or not. Saturday it was misty all day.
I never really felt thirsty and paid the price
Eat something every 15 -20 minutes - gel, bar, snack, etc.
Don’t hook up with groups you can’t hang with unless you are near the finish.
Take a long ride more serious.
I need to train more on the bike. A Wednesday night ride and one weekend ride
every once and while is not enough. I need to build some leg strength before the
HH100.

Wed bike - not
Discretion.
I went to the parking lot for the Wed ride and decided not to go. I was very proud of my decision.
Being a man it was hard not to go. About 10 riders left the lot. My guess - the storm hit them
at the halfway point.
So,I go swimming at the Y. Not such a good idea. When there is a storm there is a good chance
you will get kicked out of the pool. After about 15 minutes of swimming the pool closes do to lightning.
I wasn't in the mood to run on the treadmill.
Better luck tomorrow.

My First Spin Class
Son Travis' Lacrosse team works out at the Y. Father Bryan works out and has a family membership at the CAC.
Son Travis want a Y membership. Father Bryan cancels CAC and joins the Y.
Good - more stuff at the Y, like spin classes.
Bad - more people at the Y.
My first Spin Class - 45 minutes of good sweating. Almost lost a leg when a I decided to coast. No coasting on a
spin bike. The 45lb flywheel does not coast. I was able to spin the whole class but I was not able to get out of the
saddle as much as the instructor said. Position "3" (tri-bike like) was ok, but position "2" (standing straight up) was not ok.
I hope to get a little better coordinated and build some leg strengh.
I would like to incorporate one spin class a week into my routine.
After spin I put 2 miles on the treadmill a 8 min. miles.
Rita got in about 35 minutes of workout also.
