PlayTry

The ugly stats:
Time 3:35:10
Overall Place 204/242
Swim 34:50, pace 2:19
T1 4:51 (it was a long from the swim to the bike)
Bike 1:48:06, pace 15.0 MPH (not a misprint)
T2 2:32 (I kick Peter's butt on this one)
Run 1:04:48, pace 10:26 (again not a misprint)
I had nothing in the tank.

Pre Tri thoughts:
Swim - Swim good enough .
Bike - Lacking on the bike but it is only 27 miles .
Run - Maybe better prepared for the run although I have had about a 2 week slump in training.

Actual Tri:
My worst event to date.
Swim - Swim good enough.
Bike - Not good. The bike was a butt kicker. It was windy. I mean real windy. By the time we turned with the wind I could tell my leg strength was already weakening. I was so ready to get of the bike. We're talking slow.
Run - Not good. Maybe because of the bike. Maybe because of the lack of training. We're talking slow again.

Overall I was disapointed in my performance. I must get more committed.

Last year's time 2:45 (5 mile shorter bike route, thanks Peter)
This year's time 3:35

Thursday Schwinn

Good garage ride.
575 calories

Wed. Swim

Almost a waste of time. The Y has one lap lane open - 4 already swimming - waited until 2 left - 3 in the lane - 3 different speeds - go slow - go fast - pass - don't pass. Stunk.
About 35 minutes. No idea of distance.

Long time no workout

Sunday afternoon dog run. A nice day and a slow, SLOW run.
I have not worked out at all in 10 days. The PlayTri will be a challenge.
I will need to have the "tri-ing not so hard" attitude. I hope I don't drown. Thank goodness it cold enough to wear a wetsuit.

Anyway - 5 miles at 10 minute miles.

Wednesday Bike Beating

Dang. I mean dang. The strongest wind that I have ever biked in. I got dropped after about 6 miles. Man I need some work. 11 - 12 mph on the flats into the wind.
My only motivation was knowing at some point the wind would be at my back. The only good news is that my new wireless computer worked well.
23.78 miles
16.9 ave mph (higher than I expected)
76 ave cadence
1:27 time
159 AHR (that's some hard work on a bike)

Goal Run - a nice slow run with a low heart rate below 140 AHR a 9:30 - 9:45 pace. I wanted to enjoy day.
Actual Run - a hot sweaty run with a 146 AVR 10:20 pace. 51:31
80 degrees at about 80 percent humidity.
Not what I had in mind. Even Triger got winded.

Sunday DSU Ride

2:16 Time
33:55 Miles
16.1 AVE MPH

A very nice ride. Still pretty hard for me. I have work to do - but also time to do it.
I installed my new Mavic Computer after the ride.

Swim:
40 minutes
Approx 2,000 yds.
Felt a little stronger today.

Bike:
1:24 time
23.66 miles
159 AHR
It was a gut check for me. A (good?) hard ride. I hit it as hard as I could and finished a few minutes behind Peter. I could not hang with the 25 mph and lost them about 3/4 through the ride. I am tired just typing this blog.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Tuesday Run

5 miles (I promise)

A beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Sunday Run

5 miles
8:48 pace
I need to check my "5 mile"course. My guess is it may be a little short.
43:58
156 AHR

Dog run.

OK, I checked it out. My 5 mile course is 4 .75 miles long.

Instead of a 8:48 pace - 9:15.
I now have the 5 miler marked off. Next run should be accurate.
Disappointed? No too much since I am "tri-ing not so hard".

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Wed. morning swim/ afternoon run

40 minute swim
approx 2000 yds.
Just laps, no flips. I felt ok about the swim nothing great. I didn't want to press too hard.

5 miles
Probably about the same as yesterday although I stopped for a couple of minutes to watch a Lacrosse game.
Dog run.
The reason I always mention the dog is that the dang thing slows me down. After about a mile we stop at a trash can - he takes a dump - I pick it up. Yes he has trained me well. Then I let him on and off the leash a few times while we run. Come to think of it I may be running 8:00 minute miles just like my man crush.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Tuesday Run

5 miles
46:28
9:17 pace
147 AHR right on target.
Dog run.
Perfect weather around 55. Felt real good.

Monday Morning Tread

4 miles on the Y treadmill.
1 mile 9:30
1 mile 9:00
1 mile 8:30
1/2 mile 8:00 - see, I can run as fast as Scott. Indoors, on a treadmill, for 1/2 a mile - but I can run as fast.
1/2 mile 8:30

No HR monitor.

Rita had her first session a personal trainer.

Saturday Bike

1:57 Time
16.7 Ave. Speed
30 Miles
151 AHR
176 MHR

First ride on the new bike. It was great. Very smooth, no doubt that the full carbon makes for a much nicer ride. I did reach for the drops a couple of times and was surprised to find that they are no longer there. I moved around allot on the "tri saddle" to experiment with different positions. It was a good start to the season. My legs aren't strong enough yet to get into the high gears, but I hope to gain on it as the Wed. rides start up.
A+ for the overall experience.
Rode with Peter, Jimmy and Sarah. Lot's of new faces and some old.

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Just 30 minutes in the garage.
It's time to start biking.

Cowtown Half Marathon

Half number 2.
Watch time 2:02
A good run. It was hard to make a push in the last mile due to a couple of short hills. Hills are also relative - it may not be hilly course compared to Austin, but is was more hilly than Whiterock.
No walk breaks or restroom stops in this race. I felt good about my effort and results. The weather was perfect - about 40 at the start and 45 at the finish with a little wind. I wore a DA Tri jeresy and carried a gel bottle and sweat rag in the pockets. The gel bottle works better for me than the individual packets. Most of the race I stayed in the 155 HR range and let it climb the last 4 miles. I am sure that I had a negative split like Whiterock which is a major goal of mine.
180 Max
160 AHR
Scott M. and I road together and of course he flew through the course at an 8 minute pace. We basically run different races, it just happens to be on the same course and start at the same time.
Now I get to ride my new bike.

Tuesday Off

Took the day off and went the Stars game. Great game. The Stars won in a shoot out.
Also dropped the new bike off at Gary's for a tune up.
Watch out for Ken - he is getting new "fast" wheels, upgraded to a 10 speed cassette and new seat post. He will be blazin' now.
Gary made me feel good about my buy.

Monday Run

Sunday Bike

It was cold, but not as bad as some whiners (Peter) might lead you to believe. My real problem was my legs, or lack of legs.
It felt like my breaks were locked - no kidding at one point I looked down just to make sure. First time on the bike in quite awhile and it showed.
Well, I guess it’s a start.
23 miles
15.3 avg mph (according to Peters blog)
I must get back on my indoor trainer.

Saturday, January 26, 2008

New Bike

By the way I just bought a 2007 Trek Equinox 11.

Sunday Run

10 slow miles. Perfect weather. First 5 with the dog, second 5 alone. Gel at the start and halfway point. 32 oz of Accelerade. A good run.

Friday Swim

Man what a stinker. The last swim was great this one - not so much. I started with trying some flip turns. Other than swallowing about a gallon of water, feeling like I was going to throw up and getting a head ache it all went well. So I swam about 1,200yards and went home with my tail between my legs.

Thursday, January 24, 2008

Thursday Run

5 miles, slow run, cool weather 40ish.

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Y Treadmill

5 miles, 47 minutes.
Too cold outside.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Sunday Swim

50 minutes of lap swimming at the Y. It was a very good swim, I don't know why but I really enjoyed it.
At 2 minutes a 100 the total distance would be about 2500, my guess is around 2,200 yards.
At the end of the swim I tried some flip turns - with not much success. I am going to try a few every swim to see if I can gain on it.

Saturday Run

5 miles, 47:35, AHR 150.
Same problem with monitor.

Friday, January 18, 2008

Longhorn Ironman 70.3

I guess that I need to anounce that I have signed up for a Half Ironman.
Peter and I will be heading to Austin for the Tri on October 5th. So now I have a long term goal.
I am still working on the rest of the '08 schedule.
I am looking forward to being in 70.3 shape.

Thursday Run - Brookhaven

6 miles, 59:00 minutes.
Temperature at start 38º, at finish 36º. Well, now I know that sub 40º is not to cold to run in.
I am not sure the my heart monitor is working right. For the first mile and half my HR is 177. It does not feel that high. After about 2 miles is drops to below 150. My running pace does not change.
1. should warm up slower for a mile.
2. HR monitor has to warm up.
Next time I am going to start out walking and see what happens.

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Wed. Swim

Just me and Doc in the DA (DSU) side of the pool. If you don't count about 30 TRI101er's that Tom had in the other half of the pool. He has a big group.
I just swam. Did some drill, but mostly just swam. It has been more than a month since the last time I was in a pool.
Approximately - 1,200 yards.
Need to build back up. A little left shoulder pain - just old age.

Friday, January 11, 2008

Dog run

And so Scott chimes in with "goals are not the enemy". Well, well let's get all philosophical. Now Scott makes the “I am not a fan of” list. The list is getting too long. I may have to adjust my thinking.

Run - 43:26 time, distance? a little less than 5 miles, Probable around a 9 minute pace.

It all begins

My friend, Jimmy, called letting me know that he was making some new years resolutions was going to send them to me so that I could help hold him accountable. Now Jimmy is the guy who got me into this mess by making me ride in the MS150 in 2006. He is already a better biker than me but I believe that he is going to be setting some hard goals. I already knew that I didn’t like Peter (he tries to hard) and D’ (she tries to hard) and Eric (he is too young) and now Jimmy want to set goals. Dang it, why can’t we just all get along. Now what do I do? Man up or lay down? Go through the year fat, dumb and happy or do I follow my peers and “set goals” that I have to stretch to reach. I will be sore, less fat, still dumb, more marital conflicts but maybe just a little happier.

I haven’t decided yet.

Tuesday night run: 4 miles 35:10, 8:48 pace
